The challenge

Although he has an extensive background in the food and beverage industry, for Michael Coutsaudes, Brunch & Co is his first cafe.

He was therefore open to expert advice on the best choice of furniture and equipment, particularly to make the most of the space he had available.

Michael was also working to a tight timeframe regarding the fitout of the cafe. He needed to stagger the delivery of furniture and equipment to match the progress of the works.

How Cafeideas helped

When he was planning Brunch & Co, Michael had specific ideas of the look he wanted to create. An internet search led him to the Cafeideas website, where he was impressed by its range and pricing.

“I visited the Cafeideas’ showroom in Chippendale and it was great to be able to see everything firsthand,” he said. “They had everything I needed in the one place so that made it easier to visualise how it would all work together.”

Michael particularly appreciated the help he received from Vibha, a member of the Cafeideas team.

“Vibha listened to what I wanted and then if she thought there was a better option, she told me about it,” said Michael. “For example, she suggested a tabletop that would look better and be easier to keep clean than my original choice. She also looked at the design plan for the cafe and helped me figure out which equipment and furniture would fit best in the available space. Lots of other businesses just try to sell you things, but Vibha was genuinely interested in helping me make good choices.”

Cafeideas was able to make deliveries in accordance with the fitout schedule, and store some items until Michael was ready for them.

From Cafeideas – and using the Silverchef leasing option – Michael purchased table tops, table bases, stools, a commune complete table, chairs, bar stools, 4 burner gas cooktop, gas griddle, gas fryer, under bench ice maker, grill station, milkshake mixer, toaster, pizza/sandwich bar preparation top, single glass door fridge, food display case and an under bench fridge with glass doors.

“Overall I found Cafeideas very good to deal with,” said Michael. “I would definitely use their services again and recommend them to others.”

About Brunch & Co

Brunch & Co opened in November 2014. It is named for its focus on serving a delicious breakfast all day.

“I think everyone enjoys breakfast style food, whether that’s in the morning or the afternoon,” said Michael. “We’re serving lots of classic breakfast items as well as some new dishes that are proving popular too.”

One of the fun items on the menu is the Cronut – a cross between a croissant and a donut available in cinnamon, jam and chocolate crumble flavours.

“Some other popular items are our Acai berry fruit bowl, eggs benedict, omelettes and our famous bruschetta stack,” said Michael. “It includes smashed avocado, bacon and poached eggs with a mix of tomato, onion and basil on top. And for those who want a lunch style dish, we also serve a lamb souvlaki plate, healthy fresh wraps and salads.”

A great design inclusion is the cafe’s newspaper bar counter top, featuring newspaper clippings from the 1950s to today, overlaid by glass.

“Our customers love reading the articles while they sip their coffee,” said Michael. “There’s a park across the road so we’re fortunate to have a very nice green outlook.”

Michael said the best part about running the cafe has been meeting the people who call in. “I think the locals appreciate us being here and we’re getting really fantastic feedback about our food and coffee,” he said. “We’re also responding to what our customers are interested in and offering new items on the blackboard regularly.”

Brunch & Co is open 7 days, from 6am to 4pm on weekdays, and from 7am to 3pm on the weekend. It is located at 34 Mitchell Road, Alexandria. Phone 9699 0088.
