New, increased seating for Cairns Airport
Cairns Airport is one of Australia’s busiest, with around four million passengers passing through each year.
Famous for its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, tropical rainforests and outback North Queensland, the region attracts visitors from around Australia and throughout the world.
To accommodate growing demands, Cairns Airport recognised the need to increase the food and beverage seating capacity in the Domestic Terminal. Cairns-based Myriad Design was engaged to manage the solution for the additional seating.
“We’d been responsible for the design and project management of all the café, restaurant and bar facilities in the Terminal about four years ago,” said Myriad Design’s Director Stuart Jackson. “This latest project required us to look at reconfiguring and expanding seating for customers at a range of food and beverage outlets in the terminal.”
Stuart said there are approximately half a dozen outlets positioned around the perimeter, or as kiosks in the central area of the terminal.
“Our brief was to recommend different styles of chairs and tables to match the requirements of each outlet,” said Stuart. “Factors that came into our recommendations included budget, aesthetics, suitability for purpose and durability.”
Myriad Design put the project to tender and Caféideas was among the companies to respond.
“The cost of the chairs and table tops offered by Caféideas was considerably less expensive than others,” said Stuart. “They also had what was needed in stock, or could source it within a reasonable timeframe.”
Caféideas was awarded the project which included having bar stools custom made to match some existing stools which would continue to be used in the airport.
“Rachel from Caféideas was fantastic to work with,” said Louis Jackson, Draughtsman with Myriad Design, who managed the day-to-day project. “Our client expressed some concerns about the durability of one of the chair styles we were using. Rachel was able to source photos of the testing that was done as well as documentation that described the manufacturer’s testing process. Having this information demonstrated its durability which reassured the client that the chair was a good choice for its intended use.”
Louis said that he also appreciated Caféideas’ flexibility regarding delivery of the goods.
“We needed the table tops quite urgently and the bar stools being made overseas were not ready,” he said. “Caféideas split the delivery into two so we could have the table tops straight away and the rest when it became available. They did this without increasing the delivery fee for the freight from Sydney to Cairns. We also received the bar stools within a couple of days of their arrival on the dock in Sydney.”
