The challenge

As one of Sydney’s most loved pubs, The Grand National in inner city Paddington has recently undergone major renovations.

“Our architect, Woods Bagot, had incorporated some built in furniture as part of the design, and we needed freestanding tables to match their colour and style and fit the space we had available,” said Lance Burrows, the hotel’s licensee. “To get exactly what we wanted, we knew we would need to have the table tops custom made.”

To fit the renovation schedule, the custom made table tops needed to be ready within six weeks of being ordered.

“We also needed commercial fridges for the bar,” said Lance. “And because the renovations were a substantial undertaking for us, we were keen to source these at a good price.”

How Caféideas helped

Lance first discovered Caféideas through an internet search. He liked the company’s range and prices and decided to visit Caféideas’ showroom in Sydney’s Chippendale.

“Our architects had very specific ideas about the style of timber tables we needed,” said Lance. “It was therefore really helpful to be able to see samples in person and check out the colour and texture before committing to buy.”

Lance dealt with Vibha who assisted him with his order. “I explained to Vibha what we needed and she said, ‘No problem’,” he said. “Caféideas came up with what we wanted within the six week timeframe, which is really efficient for custom made furniture.”

For The Grand National Hotel, Lance bought bar coolers, complete tables, custom table tops and table bases.

“Apart from offering good prices, it was good to deal with Caféideas because they have a large range and this meant I could get a lot of what I needed from one place,” said Lance. “This was a timesaver for me as I didn’t have to shop around with different suppliers, and this was a big advantage.”

About The Grand National Hotel

Established in 1946, The Grand National Hotel (or ‘Nash’ as it’s affectionately known) is something of an institution on the Sydney pub scene.

“People enjoy coming here because it’s a classic and quaint local pub,” said Lance. “Another big drawcard is the quality of our food. People know they can get a great steak here and our crab tortellini is another dish that’s hugely popular.”

The renovation has created a new layout with lots of great spaces for people to gather. The Grand National Hotel is perfect for a wide range of functions or simple get-togethers.

“We have plenty of customers who are locals, but people travel from all over Sydney to spend time here,” said Lance. “We’re really thrilled with the renovations and the response to them has been fantastic.”

The Grand National Hotel is open 7 days, from midday until late. It is located at 161 Underwood Street, Paddington. Phone 02 9363 4557.
