Eastwood is a leafy suburb, located about 17km north west of the Sydney CBD. Not too far away is Macquarie University, a bustling campus with around 40,000 students and staff.

And in October, Eastwood will become home to a first for the suburb: a Japanese restaurant that features karaoke.

“There’s nothing else like it on offer in the area,” said co-owner Yang Wu. “We think it will appeal to the many students in the region who would otherwise have to travel to the city or long distances elsewhere to have some fun with karaoke.”

The restaurant, known as Tounoya, has been a year in the planning. And at 185 seats, it is significantly bigger than other Japanese restaurants nearby.

“The menu has something for everyone and we’ll be serving many popular and authentic Japanese dishes,” said Yang. “This includes tuna ceviche, eel fried rice and seafood hotpot.”

Yang has purchased equipment and furniture from Caféideas for three restaurants so far.

“I deal with Vibha from Caféideas and she has been very helpful,” said Yang. “She’s been able to find what we’ve been looking for, and at a good price too.”

Another aspect of dealing with Caféideas that Yang has appreciated has been the easy access to finance through SilverChef. “When you’re running a business, it’s helpful to use finance to manage the costs,” he said. “Vibha helped us make all the arrangements and it’s been simple to use.”

For Tounoya, Yang and his business partner purchased a 4 glass door under bench chiller, a 3 solid door under bench chiller, an 8 burner gas range, an 18 burner wok table, a benchtop fryer, a stainless steel fryer basket, a 10L pot belly soup kettle, a 250mm blade belt driven slicer, a 3 burner gas char grill, a Vantage gas fryer and a Frymax gas fryer.

“We’re really excited to be opening Tounoya,” said Yang. “Plenty of people have been looking in while we’ve been doing the fitout. And lots have stopped to ask us when we’re opening as they’re very keen to make a booking.”

Tounoya is located at 169-171 Rowe St, Eastwood. It will open during October, serving lunch and dinner 7 days a week.
