A bigger and better kitchen equips beachside café for a busy Summer
There can’t be many more beautiful and relaxing places to enjoy a coffee or meal than Beach Bums Café located on Main Beach at Forster, NSW.
Sitting just ‘5 steps from the sand’, it has breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, which can include sightings of breaching whales and dolphins at play.
“We took over the café in 2005,” said Darrin Cornall, who owns Beach Bums Café with wife Kate. “At the time, it had domestic kitchen equipment and it needed fresh, new furniture too.”
In seeking to work out how much seating the café could accommodate, Darrin’s internet search led him to the Cafeideas website. “It had a tool I could use to calculate seating area,” he said. “I then found I could source the furniture and commercial kitchen equipment I needed through Cafeideas too. It was much less expensive than other places I’d looked, and in some cases it was half the price I was seeing elsewhere for the same thing.”
For Summer 2011/12, Darrin and Kate decided to enlarge the kitchen by knocking out a wall, and updating the kitchen equipment to fit the new space. Again Darrin called upon the services of Cafeideas for their needs.
“Damien from Cafeideas met with me and reviewed our new floorplan,” said Darrin. “He was able to recommend equipment that would better suit the dimensions we had available. Even though our new kitchen is still relatively small, Damien had several valuable ideas about how we could make the area work better for our needs.”
Beach Bums Café needed to shut down briefly to complete the kitchen renovation.
“When we were choosing the new kitchen equipment, we did not have much lead time. It was vital that we could get the equipment on-site quickly to fit ourrenovation schedule,” said Darrin. “Damien rang around to ensure we could get the goods when we needed them. If it was not going to be possible, he found good quality alternatives that he guaranteed would be delivered in our timeframe. Everything arrived on time which was great.”
The café is popular with many loyal locals and holidaymakers. During its busiest times, more than 700 meals a day are served.
“To manage this workload in a small space, we need the right equipment positioned logically so that everyone can do their job as efficiently as possible,” said Darrin. “We’ve found that there is a better flow to our work as a result of the layout and equipment suggestions Damien made.”
The updated café opened in November. “It’s interesting that since we’ve renovated the kitchen and equipment, I’ve had enquiries from a number of chefs asking about working here,” said Darrin. “The new kitchen has also made it easier to introduce menu changes more often.”
“The new outdoor ‘Boulevard’ chairs in orange, lime, red and charcoal that we got from Cafeideas really brighten the place up too,” said Darrin. “We’re really pleased with the new look and feel of the café, and we just now need Summer to arrive properly to make the most of it.”
During Summer, Beach Bums Cafe is open from sunrise until 5pm (Monday to Wednesday) and sunrise to sunset (Thursday to Sunday). Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee and cake, it is located on the corner of Beach and North Streets, Forster next to the Forster Surf Life Saving Club.
