Espresso Organica earns prestigious SMH coffee award
Espresso Organica owners Tom and Sophia Labrakis are passionate about offering great coffee and hospitality at their popular cafe in Sydney’s Concord.
Their expertise has been acknowledged in being awarded the highly regarded ‘great coffee’ symbol in the 2012 Sydney Morning Herald’s Everyday Eats guide.
“Only 11 cafes throughout the inner west and western Sydney earned this special award for great coffee,” said Tom. “For the west, there were only two cafes awarded this distinction and we are one of them.”
Tom is fastidious in his choice of coffee beans and only uses accredited Organic, Fair trade, and Rain Forest Alliance coffee. He sources his coffee beans – including the famed Grand Cru beans which represent the top 10% in quality beans – from small plantations and regions renowned for the finest in coffee.
“Apart from enjoying a great coffee at our cafe, people from all over Sydney come to us to buy coffee for their espresso machine at home,” said Tom. “All of our beans are roasted freshly on premises and it means that our customers can replicate a great coffee experience themselves.”
For the furniture and equipment for Espresso Organica, Tom purchased the majority from Cafeideas. This included a dishwasher, blender, bench fridge, pasta cooker, waffle maker, chest freezers, patio heater, table bases, table tops, chairs and bar stools.
Tom’s relationship with Cafeideas began 7 years ago.
“At the time, I was running a juice bar in inner Sydney and urgently needed three of a particular type of commercial microwave,” he said. “After looking through the internet, I came across Cafeideas. Damien had what I needed in stock and was able to deliver it the same day. I was very impressed.”
Since then, Tom has sourced most of his cafe equipment and furniture for each of his cafes from Cafeideas.
“They support my business very well,” said Tom. “For example, a few days before the Easter long weekend, I discovered my food supplier would not be making deliveries so I urgently needed a freezer to accommodate the stock we would need for a very busy extended weekend. Damien arranged for a large capacity chest freezer to be delivered to me within two days which solved the problem.”
Espresso Organica opened in 2010 in smaller premises a few doors down from its present location. Its popularity led Tom and Sophia to move the cafe to a much larger corner shop in January 2012, doubling its seating and providing a more comfortable indoor and outdoor eating space.
“From the day we opened we’ve been flat out,” said Tom. “We’ve since extended our operating hours and now serve dinner as well, including recently introducing wood fired pizzas to the menu.”
Tom is a committed fan of Cafeideas. “They’re great to deal with and will go the extra mile to source exactly what I need, often at very short notice.”
He regularly refers friends in the business to Cafeideas. “I know they will be very happy with Cafeideas’ products, service and prices,” he said. “Damien does a great job looking after us and always responds really fast to anything we ask of him.”
Espresso Organica is located at 43 Majors Bay Rd, Concord and is open 7 days from 5.30am until 10pm, except Mondays when it closes at 6pm. Espresso Organica serves the finest in coffees and teas, all day brunch, lunch, dinner, cakes, snacks and refreshments.
