A gracious and welcoming new look for Marrickville’s Post Café

In a nod to its past life as the local post office, a large vintage postcard mural graces the wall at Post Café in Marrickville.

“I commissioned a signwriter who specialises in vintage styles to mimic an original postcard sent by the local postmaster back in the early days,” said Caroline Beresford, the interior designer who oversaw the refurbishment. “Post Café is in an elegant, Victorian building from the late 1800s and my design is in keeping with the building and its history.”

Total refurbishment of the café was necessary following a devastating fire that gutted the building in mid 2013.

“I was put in touch with Post Café’s owners by Campos Coffee who supply coffee to the café,” said Caroline. “They knew the owners wanted a first rate makeover and that’s something I’m skilled in.”

Caroline’s design shows off the café’s Victorian elements, including stripped back cast iron pillars, high ceilings and arched windows. A clean-lined, black and white colour scheme, a mix of banquette seating and bentwood chairs, and pops of colour provided by bold fabric upholstery and lush Boston ferns combine to create a bright and welcoming space.

“I design extensively in the café sector,” said Caroline. “I know how to create a design that attracts customers and brings more people through the door.”

Caroline first made contact with Caféideas some years ago when she was looking for a particular style of chair for a café makeover she was working on.

“As a designer, I’m quite specific about what I want in each fitout,” said Caroline. “I was pleased to discover that Caféideas had exactly what I was looking for, and their prices were significantly better than what their competitors were charging.”

For Post Café, Caroline needed table tops that were a different size to standard dimensions.

“Vibha from Caféideas was able to get the table tops customised to the size we wanted for Post Café,” said Caroline. “I deal with Vibha and Rachel from Caféideas, and I find both of them to be very helpful. They always get back to me quickly when I ask for anything.”

From Caféideas, Post Café’s owners purchased chairs, table tops, a gas fryer, refrigerated food display, 6 burner gas oven, 600mm gas griddle, conveyor toaster, 8 slice grill station, ice machine, milkshake mixers, blender, juicer, solid door under bench chiller, glass door under bench chiller, glass door upright chiller, under bench freezer, back bar coolers and a pass through dishwasher.

Caroline is very proud of the updated Post Café. “It’s always exciting when you see your ideas go from being freehand sketches to the finished design,” she said. “I think Post Café is really beautiful and it’s a great addition to the Marrickville community.”

Post Café is located at 274 Marrickville Rd, Marrickville. It opens 7 days, from 6am to 5pm on weekdays, and 7am to 5pm on weekends. Its kitchen closes at 3.30pm each day. More details can be found on the Post Café Marrickville Facebook page.
