Locally produced coffee draws a crowd in Ballina

One of the star attractions at the new Suffolk Bakery in Ballina is the locally sourced Zentveld’s coffee, a supplier from a plantation in the hills behind Byron Bay.

“Our customers rave about our coffee,” said Jane Crilley, who owns Suffolk Bakery with her husband Sean. “I think there’s something really special about it and our customers like the fact that the beans are grown and roasted locally.”

Suffolk Bakery in Ballina is Jane and Sean’s second bakery in the region.

“We’ve been running Suffolk Bakery in Suffolk Park near Byron Bay for around two years,” said Jane. “Then in September 2012, we took over an existing bakery in Ballina and completely renovated it to give it a similar look and feel to our other store.”

Jane said their original bakery in Suffolk Park caters mostly to beachgoers, whereas because their new bakery is based in the main business district of Ballina, many of the new store’s customers are local office workers.

“What I love most in both stores is seeing how happy our customers are with what we serve,” said Jane. “We have a professional pastry chef who makes beautiful patisserie cakes including banoffee pies and lemon meringue tarts, and we also have a variety of delicious pies and breads that have earned a very loyal following.”

Jane first came to know Cafeideas while searching online for new furniture for their Ballina store.

“We really liked what we saw on Cafeideas’ website,” said Jane. “And because we were heading to Sydney, we grabbed the chance to call into Cafeideas’ showroom to see their products firsthand.”

Jane and Sean met Cara from Cafeideas and hit it off straight away.

“I’m so pleased we met Cara,” said Jane. “It was great to share our ideas for the new store with her, and we really appreciated her imagination and foresight in helping us to plan what to buy.”

Jane and Sean purchased table tops, cafe chairs, stools, table bases and a bar table from Cafeideas for their Ballina store.

“Like our other store, we’ve gone for an industrial look in the new shop,” said Jane. “The interior is painted black and features lots of stainless steel equipment. From Cafeideas, we bought stainless steel chairs painted in red, white and black as well as some light coloured timber tables to give the space character. Everyone’s been really complimentary about the look we’ve achieved.”

Jane said she could not have asked for better service than what she received from Cafeideas. “I was very impressed by Cafeideas’ professionalism,” she said. “It was really easy to work with Cara and nothing was a problem.”
